Discover the Hidden Charms of Gippsland’s High Country

Huts, History and Hidden Trails

I’ve visited Moscow Villa Hut in the High Country, and there’s history everywhere you look. It was built back in 1942 by a local bushman named Bill Ah Chow, and it’s still standing today, log walls, stone fireplace and all.
You can wander inside and read about its story, then pitch a tent at the small campsite out the back if you want to stay the night. If that’s taken, there’s a bigger camping area just a short walk away at Bentley Plain.
It’s one of several stops along the Nunniong Forest Drive, which takes you past more huts, old relics and some genuinely beautiful scenery.

7 Best Coastal Areas in Gippsland

Beaches for Every Mood

I’ve been to all of Gippsland’s best coastal spots, and each one has its own personality.
Ninety Mile Beach really does stretch about ninety miles, running well past Lakes Entrance. There’s plenty of room to find your own stretch of sand.
Lakes Entrance is one of my favourites. There’s a surf beach, a calmer stretch of water on the lake side, fishing boats coming and going, coastal walks, and you can often spot seals near the entrance.
Wilsons Prom is something else again. The beaches are stunning, and if you only do one walk there, make it Mount Oberon early in the morning. Watching the sunrise from the top is worth the early start.
Further east, Croajingolong National Park has Cape Conran, with a great beach, rock pools, and some really interesting rock formations to explore.

Best Family Friendly Trips in Gippsland

Sunrise on Mount Oberon

The walk up Mount Oberon at Wilsons Prom is one to do early. Get there before sunrise and you'll be rewarded with views over the Prom as the sky lights up. It's a proper Gippsland moment.

Seals and Fishing Boats at Lakes Entrance

Lakes Entrance is an easy family day out. Watch the fishing boats come in, take a walk along the coast, and keep an eye out for seals near the entrance. There's a surf beach too if the kids want to swim.

Camp Out at Moscow Villa Hut

For something different, take the family to Moscow Villa Hut in the High Country. It's got a great story behind it, and you can camp right behind the hut or nearby at Bentley Plain. A real step back in time.
